For Chris and Dave Kellems, it all began with needing a new roof on her parents’ quaint waterfront Sturgeon Bay cottage.
When they contacted Virge to complete a preliminary assessment on the property in 2009, she determined it would be more cost effective to rebuild new than to “fix” the numerous problems with the existing property. After they acquired the title in late 2013, the Kellems decided to begin the process of deconstructing the family cottage with the intent of constructing a LEED certified home in its place.
This house became Door County’s second LEED Platinum home and is one of the most energy-efficient houses in Wisconsin.
LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design is a green building certification program created by the United States Green Building Council that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, a building project must satisfy prerequisites and earn points in eight separate categories to achieve different levels of certification.
